Across the weekend of 23rd – 27th July, the 14th annual Open House Melbourne program will dive deep into topics of adaptability and liveability through a variety of virtual events exploring new ways of designing buildings and infrastructure – our homes, places of work, civic and educational institutions, community spaces, meeting places, and more.

Focusing on the central theme, Reconnect, this year Open House Melbourne asks us to reconsider the way we will occupy our city, and to envisage new ways of designing and adapting our buildings and infrastructure as we continue to grapple with the impact of COVID-19.

This is the moment in which we can reclaim the agency for design in shaping the public good and, in turn, re-design our values, systems and spaces to achieve a more adaptable, equitable and sustainable future for our built environment.

Amidst a rich and diverse digital program, we explore some of the coming weekend’s highlight.

This is Public – An Opening Celebration

Broadcast live from the Capitol – RMIT, This Is Public is a speaker series that looks to new ways to reconnect and transform the ways in which we live and work together. This Is Public will host speakers with different backgrounds and perspectives and seeks to answer big questions about the role of policy, climate change and architecture in the future of cities, amongst other thought-provoking topics.

Living Cities x OHM Film Series

Open House Melbourne is proud to partner with the Living Cities Forum and ACMI to present a suite of four films that speak to the Forum’s 2021 theme, The Long View—a theme that asks how different perspectives on time can affect the growth of our cities.

The suite features a series of short films presented online by speculative architect and director Liam Young – Imagined Cities: Urban Futures Prototyped through Film – as well as a series of cinema screenings featuring Björk: Biophillia Live, Last and First Men, Homo Sapiens (with a live score by ARIA award-winning composer Heinz Riegler). Together the program applies a gradient of lenses that examine the macro and the micro of our presence on this planet.

2021 Heritage Address – Secrets of the City

Archaeologist and Heritage Council member Meg Goulding and Jeremy Smith, Heritage Victoria’s Principal Archaeologist present the 2021 Open House Melbourne Heritage Address ‘Secrets of the City’.

This year’s online event presents new discoveries from some of the city’s recent archaeological investigations. For the first time, discoveries will be revealed from the Melbourne Metro dig enhancing the city’s reputation as one of the world’s best examples of a 19th century archaeological site.

The annual Heritage Address is a lecture presented by the Heritage Council of Victoria as part of the Open House Melbourne July program. The talk has been presented on an annual basis since 2009 and has been given by prominent individuals about significant heritage topics.
