Giving Cities A Face

What makes a city livable, vibrant, accessible and creative is ultimately the people that inhabit it. Over Open Journal’s Summer series at the MPavilion on High Density Happiness we looked at the question of ‘what makes a city’ from different angles. We discussed how communities are built and how the built environment can best support the interaction, engagement and happiness of the people that pass through, reside and use it.
Amsterdam based online journal Citinerary looks at the people and projects that make cities what they are. Whether it is neighbourhood portraits, interviews with local heroes, reports on special events, trends and developments, Citinerary seeks to connect city enthusiasts worldwide.
The group has launched a campaign to fund their first print edition. The crowdfunding campaign has begun and is running for 35 days on Kickstarter with a target of € 20,000.
In 2015 Citinerary started organising a series of monthly events in Amsterdam to connect the city’s makers and movers and talk about all things culture and lifestyle. Each edition Citinerary and The Makers Amsterdam invite three speakers to talk trade, the city and what they’re doing today. It’s not about fashion, design, science, or business – there’s only one through-line, and that’s A City Made By People.
The first edition of A City Made by People Journal will capture this approach in print. The Journal will consist of five city chapters, each containing the best stories (existing and new) from our cities.
