Brunswick Street Comes All Out
Arts & Events - by Open Journal
Brunswick Street is celebrating local business in the inaugural street festival, All Out on Sunday May 1st.
Fitzroy maintains its mantel as one of Australia’s most vibrant neighbourhoods thanks to the rich variety of small businesses, fashion boutiques, cafes and bars of Brunswick Street and its surrounds. The unique collection of retail and hospitality draws a diverse and multi-cultural mix of creative people that support surprise encounters, meetings, conversations and collaborations.
Brunswick Street rose to fame in the 90s with artist studios and independent stores. It’s DIY ethos placed it on the map as the place to visit for a cultural hit. Despite increasing rents seeing bigger players take up space, there’s still a murmur of that independent heartbeat.
The All Out is supported by the Yarra City Council and presented by marketing agency, Nitty Gritty who regularly teach marketing and branding classes to businesses in the area in a necessary expression of solidarity with the ‘shop local’ movement.
Ensuring the viability of our main streets is vital for the cultural longevity of our most prized neighborhoods.
There are many events planned for the day, including:
Polyester Books will be holding their final hurrah with DJ’s in store and a Fitzroy photo exhibition
The Fitzroy Nursery will be holding workshops on how to pot and grow vegetables and maintain a thriving indoor garden
Cruelty Free Shop will be hosting multiple tastings of vegan food
