St Kilda's George Cinemas Revived

Arts & Events - by Open Journal

Nearly three years after the Palace Cinema group ceased trading at the George Cinema, St Kilda residents, cinephiles and couples on dates can again enjoy a cinema experience in the grand George building on Fitzroy Street.

Trading as the George Revival Cinema, the three screen cinema has been taken over by Gus Berger, organiser of local film nights including Red Hot Shots at ACMI and Blow Up Cinema.

Programming will take in a mix of new release films, Australian and international documentaries, a late night cult series, 35mm classics, Sunday family sessions along with a weekly spotlight focusing on specific directors, actors and themes.

Opening the Friday 16 August with a screening of Cosmic Psychos: Blokes You Can Trust, the opening weekend also includes a spotlight on Quentin Tarantino – a nod to the cinema’s past, where the hot new film Pulp Fiction was screened as its opening film in 1994. Filmmaker introductions, Q&A’s and live music in the bar will also compliment screenings as part of regular programming.

The initial season at the George runs until February 2014. From there, the future of the building is unclear, as the building was recently sold to a property development group, however a lack of natural light make apartments an unsuitable option. Berger is hopeful of staying on past February and if he can, he will.

“Developments take a great deal of time, and who knows, maybe the developers will love the cinema?! Every community needs their local cinema. It feels good to help bring that integral part of the community back”.
