Australian architecture firm HASSELL and Swiss firm Herzog & De Meuron have won the Victorian government’s $1 million competition to redesign Flinders Street Station.
A group of Colombian students from Melbourne University won the people’s choice award, with a design that included a rooftop garden above the station tracks. Eduardo Velasquez, Manuel Pineda and Santiago Medina won in all four categories: overall design merit, transport function, cultural heritage and iconic status, and urban design and precinct integration.
The winning design will not necessarily be built – which might be to the relief of many.
