Around the web - by Open Journal

Home to the 2014 FIFA World Cup final and 2016 Olympics, billions of eyes are soon to be turned to Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

Recent news of a ten-cent increase in bus fares in São Paulo swelled into demonstrations drawing millions of people into the streets of all the major cities, who protested lavish outlays on the World Cup and other sporting events at the expense of basic transport and education facilities, along with the high levels of violence in Brazilian society.

An engaging and in-depth piece of commentary in the New York Review of Books analyses the current climate in Brazil, including effects of efforts undertaken by government and police forces in controlling and “pacifying” favelas in cities like Rio and Sao Paulo, where 319 armed robberies happen every day.
