Lautner by Derek Swalwell

On a recent trip to L.A. Derek Swalwell was granted the unique and extremely rare privilege of photographing one of the city’s most iconic homes. Here Derek presents his photo essay.

Derek chats a little about how this remarkable visit came about.

“For me, the Lautner designed Sheats Goldstein House in Beverley Hills, Los Angeles has always been one of those mystical houses that I only ever associated with SciFi movies and 1970s cocktail parties with celebrities doing tequila shots in the kitchen.

I was honoured when the current owner, the wonderful and flamboyant James Goldstein, granted me access to his amazing property to photograph it, living out a dream to photograph the house as Julius Schulman did in 1963.

James Goldstein recently donated the house to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) so it can be held as a living reminder of the iconic legacy of Lautner and remain an integral piece of the L.A. modernism landscape.”

A documentary on James Goldstein and his marvellous house will be shown at the Robin Boyd Foundation in August as a part of the DADo Film Society 2016 season. More details can be found here.
