Mawhera Extension By Preston Lane

Preston Lane’s considered and respectful approach to the extension of a period residence in Hobart’s Sandy Bay is a clever convergence of the existing features of the property, with a new contemporary, design-focused aesthetic that breathes new life into the home.

Mawhera Extension by Preston Lane is a wonderfully coherent expression of residential evolution. Beginning with the canvas of an existing period residence of generous proportions in inner-suburban Hobart, Preston Lane have cleverly designed an extension that re-organises the internal spaces of the home to forge a greater connection to the garden, and employs design measures that ensure an element of privacy from the street for the family of five who now reside in the light-filled property. 

Maintaining the generous footprint of the existing residence, a new planning arrangement was developed to design a more usable floor plan for its inhabitants. The removal of a tacked-on 1960’s sunroom extension, for example, was reconstructed from the retained lower level brick walls where possible. The form and scale of the new works relate proportionally to the existing house and provide a balance to the streetscape. This considered approach – anchored by the old yet injected with new aesthetic relevance and functionality – has been applied to the exterior as well where modern Scyon Linea cladding in white references the original weatherboard house. Aluminium fins and frames articulate openings providing depth, texture, and movement to the facade of the building.

A new entry provides access to the lower level of the house from the garden and carport. A rumpus room and powder room tuck in under the home and act as flexible space for the family and visitors. The new stairs form a linear, light-filled void leading up to the heart of the home and defining the family spaces above from the private spaces below.   

The interior of the Mawhera Extension is an expression of both the clients interest in detail and craft and the architects resolution to instilling the house with a greater sense of space. Aided by expansive views of the Derwent River, and a collection of beautiful furniture and ornaments within, the house now provides an elevated liveability and perfectly serves the families growing needs.
