Save the Palace Theatre

Chinese property investment firm Jinshan Investments has revealed plans to demolish the 100 year old Palace Theatre to build a 205-room hotel and 145 apartment tower.

Best remembered as The Metro, the theatre is an important venue in Melbourne’s CBD and the city at large. With the 5,000 capacity Festival Hall and 1,000 capacity Billboard venues on either side, the close to 2,000 capacity venue is an essential one, not to mention a spectacular one. As the pic above shows, the 1912 structure with three levels of balconies creates a truly memorable spectacle when filled to near capacity.
